Qld, Cancelled QR dinner a double loss for taxpayers: Opposition
ABC News BNE 3 Sep 2008
The State Opposition says Queensland Rail's (QR) cancellation of a lavish dinner for freight clients has turned into a double loss for taxpayers.
QR was ordered to call off last Saturday's $30,000 function, but now has to pay the restaurant $24,500 for the late cancellation as food had been purchased and prepared and the restaurant decided not to open to other customers.
Premier Anna Bligh has told the company to recover the cost of the cancelled function through cutbacks in other areas of the business.
She says its not a waste of money because QR will find the money elsewhere.
I support their decision to stop the function going ahead, I think it would have turned into a fiasco, she said.
But Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg says it is lose lose for taxpayers, because QR has paid a big bill and earned no business from it.
He says the freight division must improve.
"If you'd been with me in Charters Towers the other day you would have seen exactly how the freight division is not very well run. QR is not interested in running it as a freight service in those areas," he said.
QR says it was trying to recognise big freight customers who contribute more than $6 million a day.
