escaped: A man and woman are lucky to be alive after their ute was hit by a train at the railway crossing near the intersection of the Calder Highway and Avocat Avenue North.
A RAIL crash at Sunnycliffs yesterday between a freight train and a ute has reignited fears over dangerous level crossings.
A man and woman are lucky to be alive after failing to see the train in time at the crossing of Calder Highway and Avocat Avenue North.
The crossing does not have warning lights or boom gates.
The ute was crossing the railway line, driving away from the Sunnycliffs store, while the train was travelling north towards Mildura.
The driver, a Karadoc woman, was almost on the tracks before she realised the train was coming.
She tried to reverse out of the way, but did not have enough time before the train hit the front of the ute, smashing it in and forcing it off the tracks.
The passenger in the ute, a Karadoc man, was taken to Mildura Base Hospital with chest pain.
Ambulance, police and four fire units were at the scene.
