TRAIN operator Connex has defended its delivery record, dismissing claims that new services will be eaten up by train cancellations.
After announcing 277 new weekly services to be introduced on November 9, Connex had come under fire over 4539 cancelled trains in the first eight months of this year.
But spokesman John Rees said yesterday the timetable changes would make a big impact for commuters.
"Connex rejects Opposition claims that the number of new services added in the timetable announcement would be gobbled up by cancellations," he said.
The changes will see Werribee, Hurstbridge and Epping trains terminate at Flinders St instead of journeying around the city loop.
Other lines, including Sydenham, will not change their existing city loop route.
The extra services bring the total additional services since September 2007 to 633.
"Despite running all these new services our cancellation rate is still, on average, around just 1 per cent, the same as it was three years ago," Mr Rees said.

A half media beat up, with out the facts.
"How long will the next train be? Six cars would be my guess."
