A 20-year-old man is lucky to be alive after his car collided with a freight train in Victoria's west.

- Collision splits car
- Minor injuries to driver
- Police investigating

The vehicle collided with a westbound freight train at a level crossing in Nhill, near Horsham, about 5.30pm yesterday, the impact causing the engine of the vehicle to be separated from the body of the car.

The collision also propelled the vehicle backwards through a pedestrian barrier, before it came to rest in a two-metre deep culvert.

Police said the man was driving south down Davis Street at the time of the collision.

He was taken to Horsham Wimmera Base hospital with minor injuries.

The train driver and co-driver did not receive any injuries.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
"How long will the next train be? Six cars would be my guess."

One has to wonder why, as according to your map there is a hospital a short distance from the site of the accident!

Isn't there something missing from that media report? Like "no lights or boom gates are fitted to the crossing"... :-\
