10yo killed playing on train tracks - fatty - 25-Jan-2011

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/01/25/3121734.htm

Quote:A girl has died after being hit by a train near Wollongong in New South Wales.

Police say there are reports the 10 year-old was playing with another girl on the train tracks at Coledale at 6:50pm (AEDT).

She was found trapped underneath a carriage - emergency crews tried to free her but she died.

The man who was driving the train is being spoken to by police and is undergoing a mandatory breath test.

There were about 100 passengers on the train at the time and police say commuters should expect lengthy delays.

Buses are replacing trains between Waterfall and Thirroul.

The man who was driving the train? Don't they mean the driver?

While we are picking on the media...
"is undergoing a mandatory breath test"

How long does a breath test take? Wouldn't you say "has undergone" or "will undergo"?

In these times of electronic media, all the outlets rush to get their story up first. Every time they publish an article, it is monitored, and they are rated on how fast they can get the news out there, and how in depth it is. Word counts add weight to a story, hence using "The man who was driving the train" instead of "The Driver".

If they just wanted to be the first to report they could have simply said the first two lines. But instead they try to fatten things out by putting in useless "colour" to the story. Unfortunately the days of Man Eating Shark journalism are alive and well.

We have deviated somewhat from a rather sad topic. It's a pity that a 9 year old was allowed to play on the tracks and this sad event occurred. Condolences to her family and friends as well as the train crew.

Side note: If you click the link in the original post, you will find that the article has been amended to show that the victim was 9 years old and "the man who was driving the train" is now "the train driver" and "he has undergone a mandatory breath test." ABC journalists must have read this thread...

Well thats one of the many reasons why little kidies shouldn't play with trains, UNLESS there HO scale.
