Semi-dumb question

What year did 4042 enter service?

I took a photo of it at the EDI plant in Maryborough ... noted the day and the month but forgot to note the year.

4042 was delivered from EDI's Maryborough plant on 30 September 2004, and went north to Callemondah the following day as vehicle on Y243. It commenced mainline coal trials on 20 January on 9L23 (4042/ 4029; 4002) to Laleham. 4042 was placed in service on 11 February 2005.

Probably more than you needed to know.

Cheers,

Which raises another set of semi-dumb questions from me:

What was it doing between 02/10/2004 and 19/01/2005? Just sitting around doing nothing? Isn't that unproductive money wasting?

Quite possibly continuing to run trials etc. Entry to service date would be the date that QR accepted the loco and it was registered to run in revenue traffic.
Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.

Thanks very much Bruce - yep I saw it out in the open at EDI on September 6.

But Bruce stated that the trials commenced on 20/01/2005, hence my question. Trials can't continue before they commence! Smile

Might have been waiting for other locos to be signed off first. Only so many things a few pairs of hands can manage at once.

Guys,

You did notice I said mainline coal trials? Yes, there were other trials; mainly light engine ones. For example, 4042/ 4043 ran their first light engine trial together as L305/ LD04 to Bajool and return on 8 November 2004. 4041's mainline coal trial was on 18 November 2004 (4041/ 4032; 4008) while 4043's trial was on 7 January 2005 (4043/ 4013; 4007) and before 4042's trial. Some acceptance dates were: 4041 - 20/11/04; 4042 - 11/02/05; 4043 - 13/01/05; and 4044 - 10/03/05.

Thanks for the clarification Bruce. I have no detailed knowledge of such things, so it helps a lot.
