NSW, Call for overpass at level crossing crash site

A Bethungra transport company says a crash between one of its trucks and a freight train near Junee could have been far worse.
The transport company say it wants an overpass built at the level crossing.
A freight train hit a truck at Illabo in November 2006, despite 000 calls from the driver to stop the train.
No-one was seriously injured.
An Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) inquiry has found there were deficiencies in communication procedures on the train.
The ATSB says there have been 371 recorded cases of trains not complying with communications regulations in the eight months after the crash.
Peter Millynn from Bethungra Transport says its truck driver did all he could to stop the train and the outcome could have been much worse.
"There were no people there, but if there was someone trapped in a bus ... how would you be? It'd be like something you see in a horror movie," he said.
Mr Millynn says there have been many accidents at the Illabo crossing and an overpass should be built.

If the trucking company want an overpass, let them build it.
"How long will the next train be? Six cars would be my guess."

Methinks the trucking company should teach it's driver's that taking a 90* level crossing at 100kph is a bad idea. Likely to be a lot cheaper than building an overpass...

Exactly right KR, brakes work alot better when the brake pedal in the rig is depressed. That crossing and the one up the road at Taninya are always the sites of accidents due to motorists not slowing for the angle of the crossings.

This reminds me of the bridge between Gillenbah and Jerilderie. Beaut big concrete hump overpass built, to avoid having the LX on the Newell.

Funnilly enough, the opening ceremony for the bridge was held two wereks after the last train to ever use the line, had run under it!

Better still if the truck was going between points that are available to a rail hub, why wasn't the truck's load going. . .

need I say more
